There's bad news and good news for women about ovarian cancer.
The bad news is that each year about 22,000 women in the United States will get a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, and about 15,500 women will die from the disease. It is the ninth most common cancer among women and ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.
The good news: If ovarian cancer is found while it is in Stage I or II and is treated before the cancer has spread outside the ovary, the five-year survival rate is 94 percent.
